2" Convertible Photo-Visual Barlow (BARCON)
Use this two-part accessory in several configurations to increase the focal length of the objective for high-power visual observation and lunar-planetary photography. We do not recommend the Barlow for deep-sky photos when using a scope that has a fast focal ratio. These photos will exhibit significant field curvature, which will limit the usable portion of the negative.
The 2-element design uses special glasses to preserve the fine color correction of the main objective. The optical elements are hand-corrected and precision centered to insure that no aberrations are introduced into the system. The Barlow focal length is 127 mm which is longer than conventional types. This minimizes the divergence of the edge rays and therefore reduces the apparent vignetting common in many eyepieces (Plossls and Panoptics). The Barlow features a brass locking ring as described for the 2.7" focuser. Note the following positions and resulting magnifications:

1.7x after the diagonal
2x before the diagonal or camera adapter
2.4x before the Baader Planetarium Binocular Viewer (threaded directly into the prism diagonal)
3.2x before the Baader Planetarium Binocular Viewer used with the extension

Fluorite Flatfield Converter Barlow (FFC) and FFC System from Baader Planetarium
The Baader Planetarium Fluorite Flatfield Converter System (BPFFC) is another option for taking images at magnitudes up to 8x. The fully coated optics provide an apochromatic flat field over a 90mm circle format.

Photographic-Visual Telecompressor (0.75x) (27TVPH)
We have increased the versatility of our telecompressor (also called a focal reducer) by designing a variety of accessories for photographic, CCD and visual applications. The effective focal length will be approximately 0.75 times the focal length of the instrument, i.e. our f6 refractors will operate at a very fast f4.5! Deep-sky objects are recorded on film in a fraction of the time needed at prime focus. In addition, you can more effectively capture a large object or cluster of objects with the telecompressor. For instance, if you photograph at prime focus with a 35mm camera on a 130mm f6 StarFire, you will achieve a 1.7 x 2.4 degree field. If you use the telecompressor, the field size increases to 2.3 x 3.3 degrees at f4.5. This greatly increases the versatility of your refractor for imaging a wide variety of objects.

This well-corrected accessory lens preserves the high contrast and superb color correction of the main objective. While the telecompressor flattens the field to a certain degree, you may still notice some slightly elongated stars in the corners. This is less of an issue with CCD imaging when the chip size is smaller than a 35mm negative. For the very best edge star images, we recommend the prime focus 2.7" or 4" field flatteners, which have been specifically designed for each focal length of our StarFire refractors. If you own one of our 160, 155 or 140 StarFires and plan to take CCD images, we suggest our dedicated CCD Telecompressors that are optimally corrected for these scopes.

We designed the telecompressor so that it threads directly into the drawtube, thus placing the optics forward in the optical system. As a result, the telecompressor can only be used with Astro-Physics 2.7" and 4" focusers and Starlight Instruments focusers that have an adapter for Astro-Physics 2.7" accessories. In addition to our refractors, Astro-Physics focusers are featured in several popular Ritchey-Chretiens (the telecompressor produces very fine results with these scopes) and are available for telescope makers (27FOC3E and 27FOC3E-FT).

Two additional adapters released in 2007 and 2008 respectively have greatly increased the versatility of this Photo-Visual Telecompressor. The 2.7" Adapter that Threads onto the 3.25" Rear Cell of Larger Meade SCT's (ADASCTLM27), introduced in July, 2007 now makes this telecompressor available to owners of larger Meade SCT's. The 6x7 Outer Bayonet Adapter (ADA2767), introduced in August, 2008 allows larger imaging platforms like the SBIG STL Series cameras or full frame DSLR's to be attached to the Photo-Visual Telecompressor without the vignetting effects of a 2" nosepiece or a T-ring.

The focal length of the Photo-Visual Telecompressor is 27.6" (700 mm). In order to obtain approximately .75x, please refer to the exploded diagram for various configurations. Although not shown on the diagram, the telecompressor is threaded for 58mm filters. To calculate the compression factor and coverage for your particular setup, please refer to our Telecompressor Spacing, Compression Calculation and Coverage document - PDF format.

Applications:

35mm Camera - Our Prime Focus Camera Adapter PFCT--- and your favorite 35mm camera will produce very fine images in no time at all. It is best to use the Astro-Physics Camera Adapter since the length is appropriate to achieve approximately 0.75x for optimal results. If you desire a bit less compression, use our 2"/T-2 Tapered Nosepiece (AP16T) in place of the Prime Focus Camera Adapter for closer to 0.8x compression.

CCD Camera - Choose the appropriate adapter (A3503, A3504 or A3502) to space the telecompressor properly with your CCD camera for up to 0.75x compression.

Pentax 6x7 Camera - For a 2" fully illuminated circle on 6x7 film (results in approximately 55% more field than 35mm film!), a special camera adapter (ADA67P) interfaces with the Pentax 6x7 medium-format camera.

Visual - Slip in a 2" diagonal, such as our MaxBright Diagonal (PMDMAX), with most eyepieces (some eyepieces may not focus). While it is fun to use the telecompressor in this manner, your best wide field results will be obtained with a high-quality eyepiece rather than a telecompressor/eyepiece combination.

2.7" Prime Focus Field Flattener (67PF462, 67PF562, 67PF582, 67PF69, 67PF79)
Our 2.7" Field Flattener can be coupled to a variety of different cameras for truly superb photographs or images with your StarFire refractor. Each field flattener is designed for a particular focal length for optimal results. They are not interchangeable. For those wishing to adapt the field flattener to other cameras, keep in mind that the film plane should be 3.4" from the surface of the bayonet flange closest to the camera, +-1/10". (86.4mm +/- 2.5mm) This is true for all 2.7" and 4" field flatteners that we have produced except for the 160 Field Flattener (160FF).


Use the bayonet locking ring to secure your camera into position after you have framed your image. This allows you to rotate the camera to achieve your desired composition.

Applications:
Pentax 6x7 Camera - Produces sharp star images over the entire 6x7 format of a Pentax camera at prime focus. Enlargements of 16"x20" are possible without fuzzy images or loss of detail. 35mm Camera or 35mm format DSLR - use 67RT-- adapters (specify the t-ring that you need) to interface with the field flattener for optimum results in 35mm film formats. Click here to see the field flattener with our 2.7" focuser and 35mm camera. For full frame Canon DSLR's, we also offer the Large 1.875" diameter SLR Adapter with Canon EOS Bayonet (67RLEOS).
CCD Camera - Choose the appropriate adapter A1260, A1261 or A1262 to space the field flattener properly with your CCD camera.  For STL Series cameras we also offer the ADA671 and ADA672 Adapters which couple directly to the STL's accessory block for an unvignetted light path.

4" Prime Focus Field Flattener for 155 f/7 and 140 f/7.5 StarFire EDF (S155EDFFF)

The S155EDFFF 4" Prime Focus Field Flattener was originally produced for the 155 f7 StarFire EDF with its 4" focuser and was included with those instruments. It is now available as an accessory for owners of the 155 f7 StarFire EDFS version who have upgraded their 2.7" focusers to the 4" model. It is also the perfect Field Flattener for the 140 f7.5 StarFire EDF when purchased with the optional 4" focuser (140EDF4). These 4" Prime Focus Field Flatteners come with two beautifully machined, felt-lined aluminum covers to protect the valuable optics inside.

This optical marvel was originally designed to take full advantage of the medium format Pentax 6x7 camera, and will provide pinpoint stars all the way to the edge of its field with no vignetting! It is perfect for today's larger CCD cameras as well. We also offer an adapter that allows this Field Flattener to be used with the more conventional SLR's - either 35mm or digital (including a larger clear aperture version for the full format Canon EOS cameras). The S155EDFFF flattens the field across a full 4" circle without significantly changing the native focal ratio of the telescope - The 155 f7 operates at about f7.3 while the 140 f7.5 will operate at f7.8.

In the past, most CCD cameras had to be attached using a 2" adapter and nosepiece - see image below left - but we now have two direct adapters for the larger format STL series of cameras (ADA671 & ADA672) that are similar to the ones available for the 155TCC Telecompressor Corrector, the other outstanding 4" imaging accessory for both the 155 f7 and 140 f7.5 StarFire EDF instruments.

2.7” to 6x7 Outer Bayonet Adapter (ADA2767)
This adapter greatly increases the versatility and functionality of your imaging system. It was designed to couple larger format CCD cameras like the SBIG STL series and full frame DSLR’s (like those by Canon) to focusers and accessories that have the female Astro-Physics 2.7” thread. These include all Astro-Physics focusers, any other focuser that has an adapter with our 2.7” female thread, large Meade SCTs with our ADASCTLM27 adapter or the Photo-Visual Telecompressor (27TVPH). These are the advantages:
  • Allows the use of the Astro-Physics adapters that were designed for the Pentax 6x7 bayonet system (used with our Field Flatteners) to be used without an Astro-Physics Field Flattener.
  • Allows the Photo-Visual Telecompressor (27TVPH) to be used with a wide variety of cameras – film, digital and CCD imaging.
  • Maintains the full 2.7” unobstructed light path and does not vignette. This is particularly useful when combined with the Telecompressor (27TVPH) for connection to cameras.
  • Allows for easy framing of your image with hard-coupled configurations to the SBIG STL cameras, or to ST series cameras employing the AO-8 or AO-L adaptive optics units.

The ADA2767 is black anodized, and the inner 2.7” clear opening has knife edge baffles that are painted flat black. The adapter is approximately 0.85” in overall length, but adds just 0.20” to the light path.

Eyepiece Projection Camera Adapter with T-Ring (EPCT---)

Astro-Physics Eyepiece Projection Camera Adapter is a two-part adapter. Use this unit with your film camera or DSLR to achieve higher powers and closer images of an object. It is particularly useful for photographing the moon or planets. This adapter can also be used in conjunction with a small chip CCD camera when attached to the camera’s T-thread.

The eyepiece projection unit accommodates 1.25” eyepieces with maximum eyepiece housing height of 2.25” and a 1.5” maximum outer diameter. Shorter eyepieces with wider outer diameters may also fit due to the gradual taper of the internal diameter of the unit, from 1.7” to 1.52.” Because of the various different eyepieces currently on the market, we are unable to list specific eyepieces that will or will not work with this unit. Some experimenting may be required!

Carrying Case for 80mm Guidescope (C0023)
Protect and carry your 80 x 900mm guidescope with this handy case. We designed it to allow our 4.4" guidescope rings (GR4400) to remain in position on the scope. You don’t have to take them off! The case measures 39.25" x 9.5" x 10.25" and is built like our refractor cases of quality plywood with grey vinyl exterior. The inside is lined with 1" foam. An essential addition if you transport your guidescope. Unfortunately, neither the guidescopes nor the rings are available.

CCD Adapters to use 2.7" or 4" Field Flattener with the SBIG ST-8, ST-10,
STL series and Fingerlakes Instruments Cameras (A1260, A1261, A1262)

The most discriminating CCD imagers with large chips may wish to use our field flatteners for the best possible results at the edge of the field. These adapters will preserve the correct spacing from the field flattener to the focal plane of your CCD camera. Choose the correct length for your system. For owners of the SBIG STL Series of large format CCD cameras, we suggest the special STL Series adapters (ADA671 & ADA672) below for both perfect spacing and minimal vignetting.

Important: There are now a huge variety of CCD cameras, filter wheels and other accessories on the market, and all of them have different dimensions in terms of their optical backfocus or light path distance. Even different filter choices will affect the optical distance because of the indexing effect of the filter itself. It is important that you know the specifications of your own particular equipment before deciding on an adapter. The information below provides guidelines - NOT inviolable laws.

Adapters to Attach SBIG STL Series CCD to Astro-Physics 2.7” and 4” Prime Focus Field Flatteners and STL, AO-8 or AO-L to the 2.7” to 6x7 Outer Bayonet Adapter: Short – 1.58” (ADA671) and Long – 1.93” (ADA672)

These adapters were developed with four primary goals in mind:

Two versions were designed to connect your SBIG STL series camera to the Astro-Physics 2.7” and 4” Prime Focus Field Flatteners:

ADA671 – This shorter version, 1.580” in length, was designed specifically for the STL series cameras with the optional FW8-STL, 8-position color filter wheel attached. This preserves the critical spacing of our field flatteners with the larger 8-position wheel. (This would also be the adapter of choice for use with an AO-8 or AO-L Adaptive Optics Unit, along with the ADA2767 adapter, but note that the AO-8 and the AO-L can NOT be used with a field flattener. See Additional Applications below.)
ADA672 - The longer version, 1.930” in length, is the adapter for the STL series camera with the standard 5-position color filter wheel. It places the STL’s CCD sensor at the perfect 3.4” distance from the field flattener for pinpoint stars across the big CCD chip.

These two adapters were designed to work with all of the 2.7” and 4” Field Flatteners that we have produced: from the Traveler’s 2.7” Field Flattener to the 206EDF’s big 4” model, with the exception of the field flattener for the 160EDF which has its own separate adapters for the STL series cameras.

Additional Applications:
With these two adapters and the development of the 2.7” to 6x7 Outer Bayonet Adapter (ADA2767), a whole additional world of opportunities was opened for STL camera owners, as well as for owners of the SBIG AO-8 and AO-L Adaptive Optics Units. (The ADA671 and ADA672 do NOT fit on the older AO-7.) You can now have a wide open light path to your STL or AO unit as well as easy image framing from any scope with an Astro-Physics 2.7” female thread - including large Meade SCTs with our ADASCTLM27 adapter in place of the visual back. Best of all, you can now also use our Photographic-Visual Telecompressor (27TVPH) with your STL or AO unit with the maximum available clear aperture!

Even though these adapters were designed for use with the Astro-Physics Prime Focus Field Flatteners, they both can be used with the 27TVPH Telecompressor or in any light path which does not employ a field flattener, and does not, therefore, have rigid spacing requirements. If critical spacing will never be an issue (i.e. an SCT with the ADASCTLM27), you might be better off choosing the shorter adapter. It is usually easier to add extensions than to cut the length of your light path! This is especially true when used with the SBIG AO-8 or AO-L, as they add significant light path distance already.

The adapters are machined from single pieces of aluminum for strength and rigidity and bolt directly to the STL camera’s accessory mounting surface. This allows removal of the 2" nosepiece, and the much larger opening of our adapter leaves the camera's own internal filters as the only possible source of vignetting on the edges of the CCD chip. Clever radius-cut keyhole slots at the bolt attachment positions allow you to safely attach the bolts to the STL first, and then mount the adapter and twist it into position. The ADA671 and ADA672 are precisely machined here in our own CNC facility and black anodized for a rich finish. The internal knife edge baffling is painted flat black to maximize contrast in your images.

The ADA671 and ADA672 adapters each include four 6-32x1/2" socket head cap screws for attachment to the STL series camera or the AO-8 or AO-L Adaptive Optics Units.

2"/T-2 Tapered Nosepiece (AP16T)

2"/T-2 Tapered Nosepiece for SBIG CCD Cameras, SBIG STV, Baader Planetarium Mark V or Giant Binocular Viewer or any item with T-2 threads. This nosepiece features our unique tapered profile. Attach it to your CCD camera, insert the nosepiece into your 2" adapter and tighten the thumbscrew. The brass locking ring will seat your valuable CCD camera (or other valuable accessory) squarely and solidly into place. The nosepiece has 48mm filter threads and the I.D. is painted flat-black. Compatible with most compression/locking rings that we know of. Not recommended for our 92mm f/5 or f/7 Stowaway or when using our older style 2" Thin Adapter ADA2013 (or prior version ADA201). When using these items, we suggest the BP16 nosepiece. The current style 2" Thin Adapter ADA20132 was specifically designed to work perfectly with the AP16T.

Originally developed to tame the focal length of our 10" f14.6 Mak-Cass, this telecompressor will provide full coverage of the ST10E chip with scopes ranging from f9 to f18 focal ratio. The 2-element cemented design transmits close to 99% of the incoming light over the range of 420 to 700 nm. The focal length of the telecompressor optics is 12". For refractors, the field is compressed by 0.67x (when using a Color Filter Wheel). If you have a moving mirror system, the native focal ratio will increase.

This optic is not recommended for telescopes with f/ratios below about f9. For faster instruments, we recommend the Photographic-Visual Telecompressor (27TVPH).

The design allows full corner-to-corner illumination of the ST10E chip with most catadioptric telescopes. This design does not add coma to the wavefront, and thus can be used with all flat-field and coma-free telescopes such as Maksutov-Cassegrains, Schmidt-Cassegrains, Ritchey-Chretiens and refractors. The inherent resolution of the telescope is not compromised when using this compressor.

Please review the exploded diagram to see how this item will fit into your imaging system. If you want a higher compression ratio, but do not use the color filter wheel, you can add two T-2 extension rings that we offer from Baader Planetarium. Thread both the 15mm T-2 Extension Ring (part # BP25A) and 7.5mm Extension Ring (part # BP25C) between the CCD camera and the nosepiece. This will approximate the length of the color filter wheel. You can also experiment with a single extension or other combinations. Although it may be possible to use additional T-2 extensions (there is also a 40mm version, part # BP25B) to gain even further compression, you may not have enough backfocus to do so. Also please note that as you increase compression, you decrease the size of the fully illuminated circle at the focus point. At 0.67x, the CCDT67 will cover the chip of the ST10E. It can never cover the chip of an STL series camera or the newer large size digital SLR chips, because its clear aperture is no larger than their CCD chips.

  • Clear aperture is 1.75", designed to screw into our 2” Tapered Nosepiece (AP16T) or any other 2" nosepiece with 48mm threads that is designed for CCD cameras. It will not thread all the way into the nosepiece provided with SBIG cameras since the threads of that nosepiece are not deep enough.
  • 0.67x Compression ratio for SBIG ST7/8/10 + Color Filter Wheel, when used with refractors. Fully illuminated circle: 30mm
  • 0.75x Compression ratio for SBIG ST7/8/10 (without Color Filter Wheel or T-2 extensions), when used with refractors. Fully illuminated circle: 34mm
  • Approximately 5 inches of back focus is needed to achieve focus on the CCD chip. It will not work with the AO7.
  • The focal length of the CDD Telecompressor is 12" (305 mm)

We highly recommend our 2" Tapered Nosepiece (AP16T) for your CCD camera. When used with the brass locking ring of most of our adapters, this unique barrel will seat your valuable CCD camera squarely and solidly into place. Even a single thumbscrew interface will be improved. If you are using the older style thin 2" adapter (part # ADA2013) or the 2" adapter of the 92mm f5 or f7 Stowaways, we suggest that you use the 2" nosepiece that came with your camera or the 2" nosepice from Baader Planetarium (we offer as part #BP16). The current style 2" Thin Adapter (ADA20132) works perfectly with the AP16T.

As CCD chip size continues to increase, more and more serious imagers are looking for precision optical devices to assist them in their endeavors. Back in "the old days," medium format film cameras were the kings for astro-imagers, and Astro-Physics developed the 4" Giant Focuser and individual Prime Focus Field Flatteners for its faster focal ratio, big refractors to take full advantage of the film size. CCD cameras have now reached the size where they too can benefit from larger components designed to fit the 4" Focuser.

Camera Adapter with T-Ring for 35mm Camera (PFCT- - -)

Our camera adapter allows you to attach your 35mm camera to any focuser that accepts 2" slip-in accessories. It is machined of aluminum, black-anodized and the inside is painted flat black. The I.D. of the opening where your camera attaches is 1.52" (3.86cm) (some other camera adapters have a thick wall, which reduces the opening to your camera). The camera adapter is threaded for the popular 48mm filters.
Note the tapered 2" barrel. When used with our brass locking ring (or any locking ring clamp), this unique barrel will seat your valuable camera squarely and solidly into place. Even a single thumbscrew interface will be improved. Purchase the adapter with or without a t-ring. This part can also be used with the 2.7" to 6x7 Outer Bayonet Adapter (ADA2767) if you wish to do so, although the required T-ring for camera attachment will not maintain the ADA2767's wide open light path.

Owners of Canon EOS auto-focus 35mm and digital SLR's may wish to consider the larger, 1.875" clear aperture adapter below. (67RLEOS)

SLR Camera Adapter with Large 1.875” Diameter Canon EOS Bayonet (35mm and digital) (67RLEOS)

This SLR Camera Adapter for Canon auto-focus 35mm and digital EOS SLR cameras with its large 1.875" (47.6 mm) inside diameter EOS bayonet minimizes vignetting on full frame chips and on 35 mm film by eliminating the restrictive 1.5” (38 mm) diameter standard T-thread interface. Since the introduction of Canon’s full 35 mm frame digital SLR’s, people have been asking for a solution to the vignetting caused by the small clear aperture of the standard T-ring interface that is universally used to connect telescopes to SLR cameras. This was especially true for Astro-Physics telescope owners who also had either our 2.7” or 4” Field Flatteners. What good were pinpoint stars to the edge of a wide field when the edge of that field was darkened by the T-ring’s vignetting effect? So, in keeping with our commitment to imagers, we introduced a solution!

The adapter body is precision-machined aluminum and is anodized black. The bayonet is machined stainless steel, and both the body and the bayonet are baffled and painted flat black on the inside. The adapter was originally developed to be used exclusively with Astro-Physics 2.7" and 4" Prime Focus Field Flatteners (except the 160FF - Please note that the 160 Field Flattener has its own large diameter EOS Adapter, the ADATCCEOS). The 67RLEOS will position the chip (or film) at the correct distance from the Field Flattener optics for pinpoint stars. If you received your 2.7" Field Flattener prior to May 1994, you will need new aluminum parts to use this adapter. Please call Astro-Physics for details.

The versatility of this adapter took a quantum leap forward with the introduction of the 2.7" to 6x7 Outer Bayonet Adapter (ADA2767). With the 67RLEOS and the ADA2767 together, full frame Canon EOS SLR's can produce unvignetted, easily framed images with a wide variety of configurations.

Please note: this adapter can NOT be used with Canon manual-focus 35mm cameras (series FD and earlier lenses). For imagers with the 160 Field Flattener and the 160 and 155 Telecompressor Correctors, we also offer the ADATCCEOS , SLR Camera Adapter with Large 1.875" Diameter Canon EOS Bayonet.

6x7 Pentax Camera Adapter for Use with Telecompressor (ADA67P)

Thread this adapter into place, then use use the ring shown on the right-hand side of the adapter to lock your camera into position after you have framed your image. This allows you to rotate the camera to achieve your desired composition.

Applications:
Telecompressor - This adapter allows you to use the Telecompressor (27TVPH) with your Pentax 6x7 camera. Your image circle will be approximately 2" fully illuminated. We suggest that you review the exploded diagram (PDF file) showing the telecompressor with a variety of accessories. Read hint for viewing this two-page diagram.

To couple scopes that don't need a field flattener to the Pentax 6x7 - Thread directly onto your Astro-Physics 2.7" focuser, 4" focuser, or any focuser drawtube that measures 2.740" I.D. with 24 TPI in order to use a Pentax 6x7 without a field flattener. This is appropriate for our older 6"f9 and 6"f12 scopes, however, a field flattener is needed for the shorter focal lengths to obtain the best results.

Please note: This adapter uses the Pentax 6x7 INNER bayonet and will only attach to a Pentax 6x7 camera. This adapter can NOT be used with our CCD adapters (A1260, A1261 & A1262); with our STL series adapters (ADA671 & ADDA672); or with our SLR camera adapters for the field flatteners (67RLEOS, 67RTxxx etc.).

These two-piece filter holders were designed to hold gelatin filter sheets for deep-sky, tricolor photography. Purchase gelatin filter sheets from a camera store, cut into a circle slightly larger than the opening (be sure to allow enough material to secure the edges) and install. Piggyback Camera Bracket with Flat Base (PGBCBR)

The unique micro-adjust knobs allow you to frame star fields easily in 2 axes. The camera bracket comes with a flat base and screws that enable you to attach it to the holes on the top of our mounting rings. Attach your favorite 35mm camera with wide-field lens and take some terrific Milky Way shots.

Please note that your telescope rings must be tapped with two 10-32 holes spaced 3" apart to accommodate this bracket. Some of our earliest rings were produced before we included this set of holes in our standard hole pattern. Piggyback Camera Bracket without Base (PGBCNB)
Same as the above Piggyback Camera Bracket without the flat base. PGBCNB attaches to the 7" (SB0800) or 10" sliding bar (SB1000) for use with either the Traveler accessory plate (ACPLTR) or 8" Dovetail plate (DOVE08).
