This plate is made by Astro-Physics and can be used with a variety of mounts. If you already own the 13.5" male Losmandy D series plates, this is the dovetail for you. The knob assembly features a brass pin with a tapered end to hold your sliding bar firmly without marring the aluminum. The DOVELM2 is 8.5" long and weighs 2.3 lbs. A center hole on the knob side allows you to move one of the knobs to accomodate the short (7") Losmandy Universal plates. The short Losmandy plates should only be used with one of the knobs moved to the center position. Otherwise, the knobs of the DOVELM2 are spaced too far apart to grip the short plate properly. Make sure that you orient the DOVELM2 so that one of the knobs is always at the objective end of the plate. Otherwise, you will not be able to utilize the safety screw on the bottom of the male dovetail. Using the middle hole with the 7" plate gives over three inches of travel for balancing. |
Mounting plate
This dovetail plate cannot be used as an accessory plate. However if you use Astro-Physics rings or rings from Parallax Instrument (with the Astro-Physics hole pattern), you can attach the same Losmandy D series dovetail to the top of the rings to use as an accessory plate. If you are using the 17.25" or longer Losmandy D series dovetails with our 900 or Mach1GTO mounts, we recommend the DOVELM16S or DOVELM162. The DOVELM16 was designed to use the longer plates on the 1200 mount. |

This 12" Sliding Bar was designed with short instruments in mind. The middle portion of the plate is raised 0.5" above the front and back sections. As a result, the plate is long enough for optimal movement without causing interference with the dewcap or focuser. For a detailed instruction sheet, click this link. (PDF file) |

This 16" Dovetail Saddle Plate, designed and manufactured by Astro-Physics, is the ultimate in versatility for customers with instrument packages that are difficult to balance in conventional saddle plates. A total of 8 mounting positions are available to provide a "best possible" orientation for either front- heavy or rear-heavy instrument packages - especially useful for today's heavy imaging instrument packages. This plate has an inherent 8.05" total offset capability, depending on how you position it on the mount. The DOVELM162 accepts any Losmandy "D" Series or other "D" specification dovetail plate 12" or longer. As with all of our female dovetail plates, it is very easy to attach the mating male dovetail plate. Simply tilt your Losmandy plate, with the scope attached, into position. Then tighten the knobs. There is no need to struggle as you try to insert the Losmandy plate (with your heavy telescope attached) into the end of the dovetail, as with some dovetail plate designs. Warning: Older dovetail mounting plates offered by Celestron may also work with the DOVELM162. However, dovetail plates offered by Celestron beginning in 2004 (and perhaps earlier) are made to a different spec. These newer plates do not fit properly into the DOVELM162 and will slip. We encourage everyone using a plate manufactured by Celestron to test that plate in the DOVELM162 without the telescope first to be sure that it can be locked down securely. |

The DOVELM162 features 1" diameter knobs with 3/16" hex sockets. Tightening with an Allen wrench is strongly recommended as this plate will likely be carrying a heavy load. The smaller design of the knobs prevents interference with the Dec motor box when the plate is mounted in the extreme offset position. The smaller knobs also avoid interference when used on the 22" sliding bar for the 3600GTO (SB3622). The clamping blocks grip your dovetail plate firmly. Springs keep the blocks in an open position until you tighten them. The unique design of the clamping blocks ensures that they remain properly aligned with no need for additional guide pins, and the brass washer on the knob allows firm tightening with no binding. |
|
This plate includes wide recesses to accommodate the safety knobs of the Losmandy D series plates. It also features multiple machined cutouts on the underside to reduce weight. A #10-32 tapped hole at each end allows for cable stays to be installed for cleaner routing of accessory cables. |

| Mount your favorite instruments side by side with these versatile plates. The Astro-Physics Side-by-Side Dovetails are just the thing for a tandem mounting arrangement, allowing you to do your own eyepiece or instrument comparisons. Set up a wide-field scope next to a long focal length instrument if your all-night session includes a variety of different-sized objects (dare we say a "modified Messier marathon?"). | ||||
| Please note that while it might be tempting to use this type of side-by-side setup for guided imaging, that is not necessarily an application we would recommend due to potential pointing and flexure issues of one of the scope relative to the other. This potential is true of any side-by-side setup. Recessed mounting surfaces allow for your preferred dovetail saddle to attach to either end of the plate. | |||
|
Using either of these side-by-side plates in conjunction with our dovetail plates affords the opportunity to take advantage of the offset position capabilities designed into our saddle plates. Current Astro-Physics saddle plates that can be attached to the Side-by-Side Dovetail Plates include: Discontinued saddle plates that can also be bolted onto the Side-by-Sides include the DOVELM, DOVELM16, and DOVELM16S.Note: The DOVE15 saddle plate cannot be attached to these plates. The plates are shipped with two 1/4 - 20 x 3/8 socket head cap screws installed on the bottom to act as a safety stop if the bottom saddle plate clamps are loosened. Any saddle plate will accomodate these side-by-sides bars if they are designed to accept the D-series style plate, including the following Astro-Physics plates: DOVELM2 and DOVELM162 (as well as their previous versions - the DOVELM, DOVELM16, and DOVELM16S). This 12" plate fills the void for those customers whose telescopes use the Vixen-style mounting plate. Now there is no need to replace your existing Vixen-style bar, rings, or clamshell to accomodate your Astro-Physics mount. | |
|
The top portion is a female plate that accepts Vixen-style bars. In order to retain the tilt-in feature of the dovetail, the sliding bars must have an approximate width between 1.65" (42mm) and 1.8" (45mm) and that have a 75 degree bevel. Please note that we have not tested all plates that are currently available on the market. We recommend you check your plate for a good fit in this saddle without an instrument attached! |

The bottom dovetail of the plate has the ubiquitous D-series style male dovetail, allowing it to be clamped into any saddle plate which accepts this size plate. This includes the following Astro-Physics plates: As well as these discontinued, older style saddles: |
|
The saddle portion of this plate has a hole in the center to relocate one of the knobs for use with a shorter sliding bar (as pointed out in the rollover image above). With a knob in the center and in one of the outer holes, you can use a plate as short as 4.5" (114 mm) and still maintain two clamps engaged on your sliding bar. This plate ships with one 1/4 - 20 x 1/4" socket head screw to use in the bottom of the SBD2V plate as a safety screwfor this plate. Please install it in the appropriate end to function as a safety stop. The screw packet also includes a 1/4 - 20 x 1/4" low-profile socket head cap screw for use as a safety stop in the bottom of your Vixen-style, male sliding bar.Note that the top portion of this plate is not designed to be used with our SB0800, SB1000 or SB1500 sliding bars. Accessory plate - Attach to the top of our Astro-Physics mounting rings (tube diameters 5"-8") or rings from Parallax Instruments that have the Astro-Physics hole pattern (you can request it). For the 105 f6 Traveler, use the Traveler Dovetail Accessory Plate. Note, you must also use a sliding bar on the bottom of the rings with the same distance (6.3" from center to center), i.e. the SB0800, SB1000 or a Vixen Super Polaris mount. Please note that your telescope rings must be tapped with two 10-32 holes spaced 3" apart to accommodate this plate as an accessory plate. Some of our earliest rings were produced before we included this set of holes in our standard hole patter. To confirm that your rings are appropriately tapped, please refer to our Astro-Physics Mounting Ring Hole Pattern document. Note also that this saddle plate will not accept Vixen-style plates (sliding bars) like the Losmandy V-series. This newer Vixen specification is slightly wider than our long established Astro-Physics 8" specification and has a much less angled bevel to the dovetail. The bar functions as stationary mounting plate for either a heavy-duty camera tripod or TeleVue Gibraltar mount by using the predrilled holes.Refer to the Mounting 92mm f5 or f7 to the Gibraltar mount with a 7" Sliding bar instruction sheet. The bar does not "slide" when used in this manner. It can also be used as a spacer to lift the Traveler or Stowaway high enough off the Losmandy LMDUP plate so that the focuser knobs clear the LMDUP (Losmandy Universal Plate). Please refer to Using your Traveler or Stowaway with 13.5" Losmandy Universal Plate to see how this is accomplished. Please note that this sliding bar can NOT be used with Vixen style saddle plates. The base of this sliding bar is narrower than the receiving channel on the Vixen style mounting system, and the Astro-Physics sliding bar has a more aggressively angled bevel for a secure grip. Since the 8" Dovetail Plate (DOVE08) is so short, an adapter is required to raise it up above the top of the 900 or Mach1GTO declination axis so that the knobs clear. Please Note: This adapter attaches to the Mach1GTO with four 1/4-20x1" Flat Head Socket Cap Screws. DOVE08's purchased before Nov. 1 2006 did not include these screws in their fastener packets. If you will be using a DOVE08 purchased before Nov. 1, 2006 with this adapter and a Mach1GTO, you will need to order the four 1/4-20x1 Flat Head Socket Cap Screws separately. If ordering the Q4047 along with a new DOVE08 after Nov. 1, 2006, you will have all the required fasteners. If needed, the screws may be requested at checkout under "Comments / Special Instructions." |
